A pictorial history of our move into Warwick Mill
Following the disaster when our landlord at the Heywood Distribution Park went bankrupt we had to look around and urgently find new premises for the club. After a couple of weeks looking at various buildings and getting nowhere at all, one of our members who was doing some work in Warwick Mill in Middleton said that there was plenty of vacant space on the ground floor and it may be suitable for our urgently required premises.
The committee went to investigate and it indeed had good potential to be converted to our needs.
The pictures below show the whole process from a floor full of old furniture and other items through to us having our models back in action within our custom made premises.

Original mill floor

The original area that we wanted to start renting showing the collection of old furniture etc. that was filling the space.
This was all cleared out in a very busy day by a team of club members and then our layouts etc. were brought in to occupy the space we created waiting for the go ahead to erect the walls that would be needed.
Tool board erected

The existing walls and part of the ceiling have been painted which has made the whole area so much brighter. Also seen here is the tool board on the wall in the area we have designated for construction work both during the building of the club room and later for use when building new layouts.
Work bench construction

The work bench under construction by the "Wednesday" crew. Also just in the left of the picture is the first of the shelving to have been erected.
Keeping it tidy

Keeping the area tidy after the construction of the bench and shelves has been completed.
Also a smaller tool board has been added above the bench and one of our clocks has been found a home.
Temporary office space

Office area set up on a temporary basis.
This space will be used for storing books and videos as well as modelling detailed parts such as locos and buildings.

The computer will also be housed here.
Sumner Brook

We have now started to put up some of our layouts even though we do not yet have our proper walls in place. The layout on the left is Sumner Brook which will be the main permanent layout for members to use when wanting to try out their own locos etc.
N gauge WarwickMill

Our N gauge layout "Warwick Mill" has been erected to allow work to continue. It is not in it's final resting place here and will be nearer to Sumner Brook once all the building work has been completed.
The start of the wall building

The first section of the wall is started.
This is the "Link corridor" that will give us access without having to go through the "Lighthouse" project area. Fire resistant plasterboard is to be installed on the studding.
New Corridor

The inside view in the new access corridor with the fire resistant "pink" plasterboard being fitted.
A doorway will be installed here to access the reception area directly.
Long wall Studding

The studding ready for the plasterboard installed along the longest length of wall.
Window wall

The studding installed on one of the shorter walls with the window opening in place ready for the wired glass.
The access door will be in the section nearest that has yet to be installed.

Window wall plasterboarded

The short wall with one of the window openings now has it's plasterboard installed on the inside.
The long wall plasterboarded

Plasterboard now fitted to the inside sections of the long wall. The outside skin will be installed after the mains sockets have been fitted.
Mains sockets being fitted

The line of mains sockets being installed on the section of wall be the "Office" area. This area will house the computer and document files along with tables for fine detail work on models and kits.
New door

The new door in the Reception area of Warwick Mill.
Visible is the short corridor we created to give direct access to our area where the outside of the wall with the window can just be seen. This corridor will be fitted with a suspended ceiling and display cabinets on the wall in the future.
Door wall

The shorter of the two stud walls that we have had to create.
The entrance door can be seen at the left hand end of the centre wall section.
Long wall

The longer of the two stud walls viewed from what will be the Office and Modelling area.
Filling in with plaster

The new walls having the fixing screws and other indentations filled in with plaster in preparation for sanding and painting
Overall view of the room so far

An overall view of the progress so far on setting up our layouts. In the foreground is the latest project "Vienna" the tramway model. Further back is "Sumner Brook" with several other layouts not fully visible behind.
windows

All of the plasterboard panels have now been fitted to both sides of the walls apart from one very small irregular shaped section between one of the support pillars and the original brick wall.
The wall with the doorway in it is now sporting three openings for the wired glass windows as well as one for the door itself. It is now ready for its first coat of paint.
master switch

The main isolator switch box is going to be located next to the entrance and exit door of our room so that when the room is not in use all electrical power to sockets on the two ring mains will be turned off completely.
This is a precaution against accidentally leaving a soldering iron or anything else turned on thus creating a potential fire hazard or just wasting electricity.
office area

The Office and model construction area nearing completion with the computer located in the corner.
Power sockets are now live on the wall behind the desk in readiness for use.
workshop area

The comprehensive tool and construction area for work on baseboards or other larger items including complete layouts if required.
overall view

Overall view of the club room looking from where the layout "Rochwood" is located. In the foreground is "Shawbury" the Fine Scale model and behind that is Sumner-Brook, then the new N gauge "Warwick Mill" In the far distance is the Tool and construction area.
Glass arrives

At long last the wired glass for the windows arrives and can be fitted in the frames that have been made available for them.
window fitted

The "icing on the cake". The glass is now fitted and we have a secure area for our models.

It took us almost seven months to get from a room full of old furniture to a completed club room with a lot of hard work involved for many of the members.
However it has been well worth it and we now have far more space than we have had in the past and can for the first time in the history of the club have every model erected for running or working on.

Pictures of these layouts in the new room can be seen clicking here
