Southernside TMD

A "00" gauge model Built by Neil Squires

Southernside is a fictional depot based on the Dorset area of the Southern Region in the 1970s.
I joined HMRG in March 2006 after visiting the exhibition at the Champness Hall. I decided to build my own layout, and with a wealth of help and interest from other club members, boards were made and a trackplan was drawn up in May2006.
So far the layout out has taken 17 months(Oct 07)

The layout has 3 levels:

Lower Level: The main road passes the depot. A very busy road with buses and cars. A Zebra crossing for workers to access the depot. A playground where children play and watch the trains.

Track Level: A two road engine shed with engine hoist, a refueling point and a small shunting yard where stores for the depot are sorted and many typical Southern locos are on view. The Class 33 Group are working on their loco on the disconnected track.

Higher Level: This is a 'one-way' road. Busy town centre scene, lots of people, a library, shops,a restaurant, a Post Office, parking and a bus stop.

I would like to thank the members of HMRG for all the help, advice and support so far with this project.

Layout Plan

This is the higher level. Obviously a lot still to do. Would like to make it an almost separate unit with its own transformer to run traffic lights and street lights.
Buildings will also be illuminated.

Track level showing the refueling point.
The grounded coach needs finishing off, and putting up on sleepers and then I`ll need to add the junk that they always seem to accumulate.
The class 33 Groups disconnected siding is visible in the foreground.

Lower street level with the main road, the zebra crossing to the depot will eventually have flashing orange globes added.
A bus stop post and shelter, and other small street furniture needs adding (lights, telegraph poles).
A lighted bill board advertising "The Italian Job" .It is hoped to have some of the vehicles from the film on show.

As the model develops then updated pictures will be added to show the progress.
